President Santokhi: “We must elevate investments and trade to a higher level”
During his working visit to neighboring Guyana, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi attended the launch of the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC). In his speech, the head of state indicated that Suriname and Guyana need to elevate investments and trade to a higher level. “There are great opportunities for intensive and increased cooperation between the business communities of both countries,” said the president. The launch took place on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the Pegasus Hotel. In addition to ministers Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation (BIBIS) and Stanley Raghoebarsingh of Finance and Planning, members of the SGCC, the diplomatic corps, and entrepreneurs from Guyana and Suriname were also present.
President Santokhi was pleased with the launch of the Chamber. He discussed the many advantages for both countries in his speech. The relationship will be promoted if both governments are willing to facilitate business between the two countries in areas such as customs procedures; investment facilities; permits; migration requirements; certifications, etc. “Removing barriers is one goal in CARICOM, but removing trade and investment barriers between neighboring countries is a must,” said the president. The head of state further indicated that building the bridge over the Corantijn River will further promote exports, economic activities, trade, and tourism. He also mentioned strategic discussions on cooperation in the field of oil and gas, connections within the region, with Northern Brazil, will open new markets and investment opportunities, and cooperation with Caribbean countries, such as Trinidad and Tobago, will also generate revenue. “The business community in our society undoubtedly plays an essential role in building transparent, resilient, and sustainable economies,” emphasized President Santokhi. Furthermore, the chairman of the SGCC, Vishnu Doerga, stated that both countries must work together to further develop trade. He also mentioned that the SGCC will continue to work on strengthening the economic ties between Suriname and Guyana to promote the prosperity and development of both countries. Derrick Klaverweide, Vice Chairman of the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce and Commercial Director of Optiek Ninon, also believes that by working together, entrepreneurs on both sides will reap many benefits. He urged entrepreneurs to invest.
